| Cheaper Linux makes rapid strides in India |

Linux, a low-cost and lesser-known operating system with growing corporate use and backing by cash-strapped state governments, has caught on in India, diluting Microsoft’s monopoly.
Sporting a penguin as mascot, Linux is available for for a few 100 rupees. Alternatively, it can be downloaded free from the net, and copied across dozens or hundreds of computers. Microsoft’s Windows does not allow the same. Linux can also be modified to suit individual needs.
