Seattle-based RealNetworks on Wednesday announced a new project to develop software for playing audio and video over the Internet for computers that run on open-source software.

The company already develops audio-and-video-playing software and services for desktop computers that run Microsoft Windows and Apple Computer operating systems. It has also developed a player for handheld devices.

But for its "Helix Player" project, RealNetworks is turning to developers enrolled in the Helix open-source community that RealNetworks established a year ago.
