The Japanese unit of IBM said it has received a contract to build the world's largest Linux-based supercomputer, which would be based on Advanced Micro Devices Inc's next-generation Opteron chip.

IBM reported the order from Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) introduced the 64-bit Opteron in April to compete with the Itanium chip made by Intel Corp, the world's largest microprocessor maker.

The Japanese lab will use the supercomputer to help it search for new materials to be used for superconductors and fuel cell batteries and in the life sciences. IBM said it is building the computer for delivery in 2004 but did not disclose terms of the contract.
