Lycoris Unveils OS for Tablet PC Platform, Jul 16, 2003
Lycoris unveiled its new OS for the tablet PC, Desktop/LX Tablet Edition, into the hands of tablet manufacturers and resellers this week. Seen as a giant step into a new market for the Linux software company responsible for the award winning Desktop/LX OS, Tablet Edition gives OEMs and vertical markets access to an inexpensive operating system capable of running on the Tablet PC platform. “For example, a retailer can now opt for the less expensive Desktop/LX Tablet Edition on their tablets and save over $100 per unit on the floor,” remarks Jason Spisak, Vice President of Market Development of Lycoris,.“and that directly affects the bottom line.”
CRN Interview: Linus Torvalds, Jul 16, 2003
CRN: It's awfully weird timing considering that Linux is really starting to build a business following.
Torvalds: But that's the thing that makes it not so very weird timing. I can't say that I expected SCO to sue IBM. But I mean it was clear that in the U.S.-business kind of climate [that] once enough money is involved, lawsuits will happen. This is not an 'if,' this is a 'when' question. And most lawsuits are resolved. This one has gotten a lot of press because Linux finally got big enough that people decided we can make money more easily by suing somebody than by using Linux. In the end, SCO is not a very surprising [company to bring a lawsuit]. Their business was zero and it was shrinking.
How much more than Windows is Linux worth?, Jul 16, 2003
If you are the Munich City Council, Linux on 14,000 desktops is worth at least $3.8 million more than Windows, including critical applications, training, and support. And this decision wasn't made by a thin margin, but by a 50 - 30 Council vote. After this, can anyone still think the only reason some people prefer Linux over Windows is that Linux is free and Windows isn't?
The "Munich goes Linux" story has gotten big play in the tech press and a little attention in the general business and mass-circulation media, but almost no one seems to have commented on the fact that Microsoft underbid the SuSE/IBM Linux-based offering and still didn't get the contract.
US group takes open source fight abroad, Jul 16, 2003
US-based lobby group the Initiative for Software Choice (ISC) is escalating its efforts to stymie the progress of legislation promoting the use of open-source software in government departments in Australia. According to ISC policy counsellor Mike Wendy, the lobby group's executive director, Bob Kramer, plans to seek a meeting with Democrat senator Brian Greig during a visit to Australia next month. Wendy indicated that the meeting would be sought in order to discuss the Senator's plan to introduce a private member's bill to the Senate that would promote the use of open-source software in Commonwealth departments and agencies.
Red Hat Security Advisory - Mozilla, Jul 16, 2003
3. Problem description:
Mozilla is an open source web browser.
A heap-based buffer overflow in Netscape and Mozilla allows remote
attackers to execute arbitrary code via a jar: URL referencing a
malformed .jar file, which overflows a buffer during decompression. This
issue affects versions Mozilla packages for Red Hat Linux 7.1, 7.2, 7.3,
and 8.0.
These errata packages upgrade Mozilla to version 1.0.2, which is not
vulnerable to this issue. Mozilla 1.0.2 also contains a number of other
stability and security enhancements.
