Now analysts agree it is difficult to see a future for the group, especially as SCO has also threatened fellow member SuSE over its Linux offering, warning that it is not immune from future action.

The implementation of open source software, Linux, will have no problems in India from litigation filed by SCO, the owner of the Unix operating system, and distributors of Linux that had suspended its sales and support of the Linux operating system.

Although the settlement decreases competition in the overall browser marketplace, it could mean more users for alternative browsers like Opera, which first hit the market at about the same time as Netscape, Vonttzchner said. "It's not good for competition to have one less player. This settlement makes it more important what we do," Vonttzchner said. "If Netscape is gone it puts more pressure on us to provide a solid alternative."
