Mandrake Linux 9.1 is available, Mar 25, 2003

Red Hat disappointed analysts Tuesday, recording a net loss of $56,000 for its fourth quarter, though it said it broke even on a per-share basis. Analysts had been looking for 1 cent per share earnings.

Whatever else you read into Red Hat's version number jump, it indicates how quickly Linux and associated open source technologies are progressing as their user bases and development communities grow. Red Hat's aggressive software upgrade moves may be what's required for it to stay at head of the pack.

But this freely available operating system that has evolved in the geeky Internet culture of hackers and computer programming enthusiasts may prove to be more secure and robust than many pieces of commercial software designed specifically for the corporate world, according to Chris Pratt, Linux manager for Markham, Ont.,-based IBM Canada Ltd.
