Red Hat's high-end version of Linux has received a certification that clears the way for broader use of the operating system in government.

A person who posed as a KDE developer and wrote a highly emotional account of how he was "mistreated" when he arrived at Perth airport to attend Australia's national Linux conference, Linux.conf.au, was trolling, organisers of the conference say.

IR Data (Irvine, CA) recently unveiled a Linux-based portable wireless server at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Dubbed the Wireless Zone, IR Data's new gadget takes advantage of Linux, Apache, and other open source technologies to creates its own 802.11b wireless (WiFi) hot zone, within which it can deliver web pages, demonstrations, presentations, and other data to other wireless-enabled devices and systems without requiring Internet access.

In addition, Red Hat certification manager Randy Russell told NewsFactor, the hands-on approach weeds out anyone who is unqualified. "At the Certified Engineer level, you are going to have to be an experienced system administrator to succeed. It's hard to see how someone could succeed at this [exam] without real-world knowledge."
