- Reuters releases Linux financial software, Feb 03, 2003

GeneralFinancial information software from Reuters is now available for Intel-based servers from Hewlett-Packard running Red Hat's Linux, the companies plan to announce on Monday.

The product, Reuters Market Data System, is the result of a collaboration announced in 2002. RMDS distributes market data such as trading orders or prices to financial firms such as those on Wall Street.

Meanwhile, open source software advocates mounted a protest.

"We are here to promote free information technology," said Raffaele Calvelli, a computer programmer from Florence, as he donned a penguin suit in front of the Senate building. "The penguin is the symbol of Linux, which is created with open-source software. The Senate should be inviting the promoters of free software, rather than Bill Gates."

Open Source Name-brand vendors such as IBM, Oracle and Sun are nourishing the community and enhancing its enterprise credibility, even if their motivation is to build an alternative to Microsoft, he says.

Open source alternatives will continue to evolve into credible options for enterprise IT managers. But, McCabe warns, Microsoft will not fiddle while its empire burns.
