Germany-funded Linux software arriving, Jan 31, 2003

KDE, one of the major interfaces designed to make Linux slick looking and easier to use, has been upgraded, an effort that includes the first results of work funded by the German government.

Linux, of course, is an open source descendent of Unix. So it's ironic that Linux appears to be pushing Unix offstage -- but it most certainly is.

To the hardcore Linux fan, dominance will not be attained until Linux can compete directly with Windows on the desktop. This tenet has spawned a community of literally hundreds of developers working on KDE, GNOME and others in order to come up with the magical interface that will spell the end to Microsoft's tyranny. But is this really necessary for Linux to be successful?
