A Mac Angle on Linux, Jan 30, 2003

"Many Linux users like the Mac OS," said Tim Ney, executive director of the Gnome Foundation of Boston, a consortium formed to back the Gnome user interface on desktop systems. "A lot of the open-source programmers have been working at Apple, and a lot of Mac users have taken to Gnome because of Nautilus," the Linux GUI project founded by Apple software veterans.

I have been to India a few times giving talks, it is huge. The governments in some states in India are pushing Linux and open-source development in their computer science programs. There are a lot of developers who can speak English and read English, so they can easily slip in and be productive. I think once we get more Internet connectivity, which is a big "if" in India, everyone else in the world could quit [and let India] maintain all the development. They have so many people there, so many good developers, its amazing.

The day is approaching when Linux will likely replace IBM's version of Unix, the company's top software executive said, an indication that the upstart operating system's stature is rising within Big Blue.

Lindows.com Tuesday said it has begun shipping its first branded low-cost multi-purpose computer called the Lindows Media Computer.

The device includes DVD, CD, MP3 and VCD playback abilities and is expected to compete with Microsoft and Hewlett-Packard's Media Center XP, formerly known as "Freestyle."
