Red Hat exec back on stand at Microsoft remedy hearing, Mar 25, 2002
If Linux is a true threat to Microsoft's desktop Windows monopoly, then Red Hat Inc.'s chief technical officer, Michael Tiemann, is one of the nonsettling states' most important witnesses.
Tiemann returned to the witness stand today in the Microsoft Corp. antitrust trial's remedy phase. He was there to make the case for porting Microsoft's Office suite to other operating systems such as Linux, explain the need for mandatory distribution of a compliant version of Sun Microsystem Inc.'s Java, and justify the call that Internet Explorer code be made open source.

Open source wins Java rights, Mar 25, 2002
The open source community won the rights to free implementation of the Java platform last week, weakening Sun Microsystem's iron grip on the development platform.
The software giant has buckled following a campaign headed up by Apache on behalf of the open source community, which called on Sun to discontinue licences prohibiting Java compatible open source implementations, and make compatibility testing more accessible.
