GeneralHewlett-Packard has begun selling new Intel-based workstations with Linux, the company said. The x1100, an Intel-based machine first introduced with Windows in January, is available with Red Hat Linux version 7.1, HP said Thursday. HP had Linux versions of the two systems' predecessors, the x1000 and x2000, which have a slower memory subsystem than the new models.

EmbeddedRed Hat, the top seller of the Linux operating system, announced a deal Wednesday to support SuperH's forthcoming SH-5 chip.

The deal is an important victory for Red Hat's "embedded" computing division, which creates software for computing devices such as network routers, cars or handheld computers. The division has seen revenue slump as microprocessor companies cut back on new chip initiatives, Red Hat has said.

"I am disappointed you have failed to take similar action in the Microsoft case, a matter involving a party from whom you also received sizable contributions, $20,000 in the 2000 election cycle alone," wrote Rep. John Conyers, the lead Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee
