Ellison says Oracle's 'whole business' to run on Linux, Jan 31, 2002

Oracle Corp. is about to replace three Unix servers that run the bulk of its business applications with a cluster of Intel Corp. servers running Linux, Oracle Chairman and CEO Larry Ellison said yesterday.

Two years ago, just five of Computer Associates International Inc.'s 100 largest enterprise customers were asking President and CEO Sanjay Kumar about the then-nascent Linux operating system.

Last year, that changed, as 50 of CA's 100 largest customers wanted to know more about what it could do for them regarding Linux.

IBM, having embraced Linux, now is on a mission to convince others that the operating system is worthy of real-world use.

To further its cause, IBM put on display at the LinuxWorld Conference and Expo here four big-name Linux customers--clothing retailer L.L. Bean, digital animation studio Pixar, department store chain Boscov's and financial services giant Salomon Smith Barney.
