Why bother with a new format? After all, isn't mp3 open?
No, it isn't. The MPEG consortium members claim that creating an mp3 encoder without using their patents is impossible. Worse yet, MPEG-4, supposedly the next generation of Internet media streaming, is even more tightly controlled.

Linux vendor SuSE has significantly enhanced its eponymous Linux distribution with its newest release, version 7.3. Enterprises should evaluate SuSE Linux 7.3 with an eye toward its broad server reach in addition to its ease of implementation and use, which make it a viable desktop alternative as well as a solid server platform.

Penguin Computing , a San Francisco maker of computers running the Linux operating system, released two new rack-mountable servers and a workstation this week. The 1.75-inch thick Relion 115 and 125 servers accommodate 4GB of memory and two 1.26GB Pentium III CPUs--each with a 512k cache. The 115 uses lower-end IDE hard drives; the 125 uses faster, but more expensive, SCSI drives. Penguin also sells Altus servers using Advanced Micro Devices CPUs.

It took me a few minutes, but I settled comfortably into the realization that this installation was not a flashy, polished GUI installer a la Mandrake, but a user-driven command-line interface more akin to "Linux from scratch." It didn't take any graphics or fancy UI to convince me, though, that this was a very powerful package.
