Microsoft to Appeal Breakup Ruling in Court, Feb 25, 2001

Lawyers for the federal government and 19 states will respond before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit on Tuesday, fighting to uphold U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson's June 2000 ruling that Microsoft is an abusive monopoly and his consequent order to break the company in two.

One major competitor, Red Hat, produces the alternative Linux operating system. Red Hat President Matt Szulik said Microsoft's tactics have effectively locked all competition out of the desktop market. "It doesn't seem that there has been much of an opening for any Linux provider to wedge into that space at all," he said.
