t's clear that Microsoft is eager to exploit its ubiquity on the desktop to lubricate server software sales. The Microsoft.Net project, although laudably open in connectivity terms, is squarely a Windows-based platform. Its most basic aim is to get more Microsoft software onto the servers of Web businesses. Interestingly, the equally focused Linux fringe are intent on doing exactly the opposite. Linux is already established as a server platform for the Web, and now its backers are making a concerted assault on the desktop.
