Expect delays. I have one hand in a cast due to a circular-saw injury caused by a previous work-related injury thanks to Farbest Foods. Apr 5, 2015

Hi Devyn, I am new to the linux forum. I am looking for a good operating system for my laptop Toshiba M55 Widescreen DVD/CD-RW, Pent.M 1.864GHz / 1012GB RAM / 20GB HD, WiFi. My brother thought that Ubutoo? might fit the bill. He said I could get Apache for a writing program.

I personally recommend Ubuntu. However, some people (for your hardware specs) might recommend Fedora, Bodhi, or Linux Mint.

i want to study Linux internals and also want to get involved in the Linux kernel development. I have read the book Linux kernel development by Robert Love and now i want to do some practical work like configuring and compiling the kernel.I am also reading your articles regarding configuring the kernel and articles are very nice and easy to understand.
i need your opinion that how should i move forward?

Maybe you should contact the Linux-kernel developers at Github. That is where the main development happens. Or, go to kernel.org and look for contact information. Good luck!

Hi, some one posted a link on one of my threads. Looks dodgy. My thread is 'Mint linux install black screen.....'.
Can you see if it's safe?

Basic IO - A simple input and output like using the date command in the terminal.

Stream IO - Data transfer to and from storage devices.

I am trying to do the following. There are two machines A & B.There are 2 shell scripts on machine A(could be called as server) and the machine B(client) should call the scripts on A and only if B is authenticated then the scripts must be run at machine A and the output of those scripts must be sent to machine B,the call to scripts will also have inputs

        DevynCJohnson
I would study client-server permissions and network file systems. You could set up a network filesystem and machine-B would execute the scripts if it has permission just like it would locally.

I've spent almost my entire career working with Windows (Win 3.1) until now. Does anyone know where I can start on the beginner level? I've done a Linux install or 2 but have had to work with Unix and Linux only rarely & know little of their workings and commands. I was thinking of getting a Linux+ cert., but I also want to be somewhat accomplished so that I can switch roles from a Windows admin to a Linux admin.

Hey Superman :D If I know a lot about Windows and I have a client that wants me to attempt a Dual Boot with Win 7 Ult. on his laptop, which Linux would you suggest I gather him? I'm not sure of his level of computing on either platforms.

In general, I would recommend Ubuntu. If the hardware's resources are low, then I would try Xubuntu or Lubuntu. If the user dislikes the Unity environment, then I would recommend Linux Mint.

Hi. I'm a new member, just downloaded Cygwin 32 bit. I have Windows 8.1 64 bit. So, now I am downloading Cygwin 64, without uninstalling Cygwin 32, and the 64 bit is taking longer than 20 min. Is it normal? Please confirm compatibility with Windows 8.1?
