Lesson: Fish protocol

Goin' Fishin'

How to use the 'fish' protocol to manage remote files

A Fish Story

If you've got several computers scattered about your home or business, you know that to be able to sit down at any of them and work as if you were sitting at your own personal workstation would be just wonderful. Well, if you have KDE 3.1 or higher installed in these machines you're in business. You can even work on files that are half-way around the world.

'fish' seems like one of those 'best kept secrets' of Linux. I happened to stumble upon it when I was preparing some information for some clients who had inquired about the possibility of creating a virtual network between to offices in neighboring towns. I'm glad I found it, because, it removes some of the cumbersome aspects of ssh, while still using it for data transport. It eliminates the security risks of ftp, while incorporating its ease and familiarity.
