wifi & Linux

I just got my PC switched over to Linux. I would like to know if all data jack type of wifi gadgets (that you stick in the USB port) work with Linux or if there is something I should know before I buy one.

Generally everything works with Linux. how hard it is to set up largely depends on the kernel version, distribution, and how open-source friendly the company who made it.

What I would do, google around for one, and then google it along with `linux' at the end. And if it comes up with a decent amount of `[SOLVED]' in the thread names, or something like `Thanks, I got it working' as/near the last post, it's generally going to work by default, or with little hassle.

Also, I wouldn't pick the out-of-the-factory devices--I would wait for the card to be 1-3 years old (hell, you can go as old as 2006 (WPA/WPA2 became officially supported by then)).

I have two usb style wifi adapters that I bout from Walmart. Both work in Ubuntu with out having to set up anything.

Netgear WNA1100 works great and cost me about $30. I have not had issues with it.

Linksys WUSB600N worked great until I had a kernel update and then it would disconnect itself after 5 minutes. It was very annoying. I have not used it since then, but I will try again later with the newest kernel version and let you know if it is doing the same thing. I don't have time at the moment.

Does the Netgear have a monthly fee? I stopped using my Cricket data jack because it cost me $50 a month.

I am sorry, I thought you were asking about wifi adapters. I don't have any experience with a cellular network type.
