breaking wep or routing: which is more KISSer?

I see so many blogs on the internet on how to break wep keys and one i read, the author said he took more than three days to learn the series of software needed to break wep keys on the Internet. I know the software for doing this are aplenty on the net, and there are networks where the firewalls or security are not well tuned, but how ethical is this practice?
also, would it not be better, since your system is within range of this networks to use the same time to learn routing, install routing on your linux system (i know many exists, like openwrt) and route your packets through the network rather than breaking the wep keys? For ethics and KISSing things, which is better, breaking the wep or routing?
thanks.

I am not sure what you're asking, but...
WEP (Wired-Equivalent Privacy) is method for WIFI encryption, but it's very insecure. There are many guides because they are trying to tell everyone it's a bad way for wifi security, and hacking it takes less than an hour, opposing to WPA which ranges from hours, to eons (depending on the length of the password) to hack.

I don't want to argue about ethics, but hacking is both ethical (whitehat) and unethical(blackhat).
Whitehat hackers are hackers that are contracted by the target usually to test security, blackhat hackers hack for malicious reasons and personal gain.

Why hack into wifi routers for personal gain? Because free Internet!

free internet means unlimited supply of internet. where i come from, we think of infrastructure associated with internet. so going for freedom might take away the internet itself and put it back into the arena of slavedom: where the rich only get to have it. i believe in free internet but with the responsibilities that go with freedom.
how would this relate or tally with hacking?
tnx
