What Is Your Favorite Desktop Environment?

Right now it is hands down xfce.

It is lightweight, straight forward, easy to customize, nothing fancy and it doesn't eat up resources.

I like to save my power for the software.

Although its really bulky, I still like Gnome. I don't like KDE as I can't stand the software names that starts with K. :D *kidding* I've used KDE too but I prefer Gnome.

Gnome for me. More specifically, Gnome 2, but I'm becoming partial to Gnome 3 and Gnome-Shell. I'm an eye-candy kind of guy, and don't do anything intense enough for a smallish hit to my available RAM or video memory. I've always found it pretty easy to tweak to my liking, too.

The Linux Desktop is currently a mess with a plethora of options available. Unity as on Ubuntu 11.10 and GNOME 3 as on Fedora 16 are cluttered and in my opinion not suitable for use on a production machine. I need a Desktop Environment with stability that allows me to just get things done with minimal fuss. This is where the older Gnome 2 Desktop Environment excels.

I personally favor Xubuntu. But I'm sure everyone has their own taste and opinion and this is mine.

I will add that...

I choose Ubuntu and CentOS.

I started with Linux Mint KDE 12 Lisa. Mainly because of the google search engine.

But I had problems with KDE.

So someone suggested xfce after reading my observations.

I then tried xfce on Linux Debian 12 and xfce is now my default choice.

Because I have a long on and off again history with Ubuntu, Ubuntu was next.

I then tried Ubuntu Unity and it was a challenge learning the unique interface options but I prefer xfce and then I read an article about Ubuntu Studio.

Now I am currently beta testing Ubuntu Studio 12.04.

I have three computer.

32 bit Dell laptop - Xubuntu 12.04

Desktop & 64 bit Compaq laptop - Ubuntu Studio

Because of the strong history regarding math and science...

CentOS is next.

Xubuntu isn't a bad one, have you tried with Kubuntu ???

I have to tell you, out of all the environments, I really, really dislike KDE. I have never been successful with it, and as many people that come to me for Linux help, I do not ever recommend KDE. It's just too complicated and disorganized in my opinion.

I know I'm one of the few, but I actually like Ubuntu's Unity. It's really nice, and I love the sidebar.

I also like GNOME 3.

Lately I've been favoring KDE. Funnily enough, it's not so much the actual Desktop Environment for me. Both Gnome, KDE, XFCE, and other alternatives nearly do all the same things, to a satisfactory degree. However, developing QT applications is easier for me, so I prefer to use a Desktop Environment that synergizes with my application development. The QTCreator IDE is fabulous, and I enjoy using a framework designed for use with C++.

I like Ubuntu's desktop mostly. Mint is pretty too. But since I like it custom desktop it would be a good idea of posting pictures of your desktops (if there is no thread like this already).

I have been using fedora for a while, hasn't really been a problem, I of course over time have gotten used to it. I think I might try some others, although I would feel like I am cheating on my fedora.. you guys say Mint, I might try..

Unity and KDE.. I like them BOTH. Qt is great for both of them. I even use KDE on Windows 7....

But there is nothing better then No DE AT ALL. A terminal interface is still the most powerful.

GNOME. Since I've learned and read about it in (In a Nutshell) books, it's the only one I trust.

I prefer Unity. Canonical has done a great job designing this user interface. My second choice is GNOME3.
