What's an alternative to the command "StartX"?

I'm trying to pull up the GUI on one of my VMs but StartX wont work

Are you using all lowercase?

You could just try an "init 5" to put it into runlevel 5 and see if x starts automatically..

Rob:
Yes I'm using all lowercase.
I also tried init 5 under root and I'm getting a "Command not found" error

I tried the /sbin/init 5 command. It's doing something however, it's currently frozen with this message "INIT: Id "x" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes"

Not sure what it's going to do after 5 minutes... waiting...

whee :) ctrl-c out of that and try the /usr/bin/startx

I haven't had x issues in quite a while - otherwise i'd probably be more help ;)

Got another one of those "disabled" message..

Tried the /usr/bin/startx command and got this message: No such file or directory

What was the last thing you did before it stopped working :)

If it's just a workstation.. give it a reboot and see if whatever funkiness is going on will go away..

Did you edit any config files related to the x server?

I figured it out. The ISO I was working on did not have x in it and it wasn't designed to do gui stuff.

It's like trying to buy burrito in an ice cream joint.

For the future readers: the best alternative to startx is lightdm.
