PCLinuxOS

http://www.pclinuxonline.com/pclos/index.html

PCLinuxOS is a very nice looking live distribution based on the popular distribution Mandrake. Of all the distributions tried for this review, this is the nicest looking and the most friendly from a user perspective.

PCLinuxOS Preview 7 was used for this evaluation.

Good PointsWeak Points
  • comes with a lot of applications
  • master control center - found my printer right away and printed a page with no problem
  • comes with Firefox, Mozilla and Konqueror - all with Flash enabled
  • sound worked right away
  • Slightly older version of KDE
  • inconsistent on booting. Sometimes it wouldn't boot into the GUI
  • couldn't change my keyboard layout to the Spanish keyboard, which I use

Setup of everything was easy except for the keyboard which I never got to work for my locale. For those of us who don't use the US layout (and who type a lot) this is quite uncomfortable. It didn't seem to like my 15 inch monitor at first. I had to boot with some parameters, but these options are explained on the splash screen.

PCLinuxOS is the best looking live distribution of all. Those who base decisions on first impressions are bound to be attracted to Linux just by seeing it.
