    Comments from the Author:

I'm a word processor junkie. I've used so many different word processors I can't countthem all, and I've used them on many platforms, ranging from an 8-bit Atari 400 to recentPentium-II machines. In fact, I've used WordPerfect on many of these platforms.

Outside of word processors, a few years back I started to be interested in a new OScalled Linux. Stable, inexpensive, and growing rapidly in features, Linux seemed likesomething worth learning to use. In 1994, it was weak on applications, though, and that'swhat I needed. That's now changed. WordPerfect 8 for Linux certainly isn't a breakthroughfor Linux (there were earlier versions of WordPerfect for Linux, for one thing), but it is part ofthe answer to the question asked by many new (and old) Linux users: What applicationsare available?

I wrote Special Edition Using WordPerfect from the ground up for Linux with the goal ofexploring not just WordPerfect's features, but how WordPerfect interacts with the Linux OS.You'll find information on WordPerfect configuration, of course, but also explanations ofWordPerfect for Linux's font and printer model, directions for mounting and accessing fileson floppies in Linux, tips on using tools like Ghostscript to further WordPerfect for Linux'sabilities, and information on using Linux's UNIX-style filesystem layout to best advantagein a multi-user environment with WordPerfect.

If you want to use a WYSIWYG word processor in the Linux OS, WordPerfect is a goodchoice, and this book will help you along the way, whether you're new to WordPerfect, newto Linux, or even if you have experience with both. I hope you enjoy it!
