HOWTO install Desura for Linux

« Back to X org / Desktop Articles

Desura, a digital distribution service for gamers, puts downloadable games, mods and downloadable content into gamers' hands directly from the developers. Think of it like xbox live for your PC. After a 2 month beta period, Desura has released their Linux version of their software. This article explains how to install it.

First, download the latest (Desura download) version of Desura and unpack it:

[rob@station-222 Downloads]$ tar zxvf desura-i686.tar.gz
desura/
desura/README
desura/desura

Their README states:
Installation:
Extract the 'desura' binary to any location where your user has write
permissions, and run. It will download the rest of the components required
and install itself into a folder called 'desura', unless it's already in one.

So - cd into the desura directory and run the desura script:

[rob@station-222 Downloads]$ cd desura
[rob@station-222 desura]$ ./desura &

This will open up a nice looking download/install box.

Once it's installed, it will present you with a login box. If you aren't a member yet click 'create account' and get going with it!

Once you're logged in, you can peruse through tons (65 currently) games for Linux.

Next time you want to run it, you'll see that it auto-installed itself as a launcher in gnome-shell..

Now go give it a shot and let us know what you think!

NOTE: This was installed on a Fedora 16 i686 install.
